How to avoid rental scams in Ireland

In short

Never pay a deposit or rent before you’ve viewed a room in person and met the person renting it. Gardaí say rental scams spike between August and October, and common signs include rent far below the going rate, a host who is ‘abroad’, pressure to pay quickly, and requests to pay by bank transfer, vouchers or crypto.

What do rental scams look like?

Gardaí describe several common patterns:

  • The absent landlord, who says they’re overseas and asks for a deposit before you can see the room.
  • The fake host, who shows the same property to many people and takes deposits from all of them.
  • Photos copied from other listings, often of rooms that look too good for the price.
  • Pressure tactics, such as ‘lots of people are interested, pay now to secure it’.

What checks should I make?

Before any money changes hands, Gardaí and the CCPC suggest you:

  • View the room in person and meet the host there.
  • Check that the address exists on a map, and reverse-image search the photos.
  • Be wary of rent far below similar rooms nearby.
  • Keep the conversation on the platform until you’ve met.
  • Avoid cash, money transfer services, gift cards and cryptocurrency.

How does Sa Bhaile reduce the risk?

Hosts verify their identity and address before a listing goes live, and a person reviews each new host’s first listing. Messages stay in the app, and we show a warning when a message asks for money, gift cards or a move to another app. You can report anything privately with “I’m not comfortable”.

What if I’ve been scammed?

Contact your bank or card provider straight away, keep every message and receipt, and report it to your local Garda station. If you paid by card, ask about a chargeback. Tell us in the app too, so we can stop the account.
